One of the young men that we work with is Rafael, who was shy when we first met him but has a huge heart to care for his family and the people in his community.
Before Rafael came to La Familia he felt depressed and hopeless because he wanted to help support his family and become independent, but his mental health challenges were a huge barrier. Rafael worked with our therapist, to build coping skills, connect to psychiatry and substance use treatment services, and address the source of his sad feelings–a long history of traumatic memories and intrusive thoughts. Rafael also worked with his peer counselor to connect with employment resources, health services, building communication skills, and advocating for him to receive the support that he deserves. After just 14 months, Rafael has achieved sobriety, has been able to address his most distressing symptoms with medication, and has built stronger relationships with his family and friends. Now, Rafael is proud of what he has accomplished and hopeful that he can get employment and continue contributing positively to his community.
