What we do / Developmental Disabilities Services

Bilingual Support & Equipment to Help You Live a Full Life

We know that when someone is diagnosed with a developmental disability, it can be especially hard to find service providers who speak Spanish and who understand what it is like for these families who find themselves in new territory that can be confusing and scary

It’s hard for people to navigate the systems that are supposed to help. Many times health care providers use a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to the disability community, often ignoring the unique circumstances that make up their daily lives. We work with these families to provide bilingual and culturally sensitive help to get services that can make their lives easier.

Our team members work with you to create an individualized plan and connect you to tools and services that can help you, whatever your loved one’s age. If your loved one is a child, we help you advocate to the school district. Because we know that caregiving can be hard, we can connect you to agencies that can help you have a break. Our team members act as advocates to help you feel seen, supported, and welcome.

Our team members receive special training and each has several years experience helping families like yours. Also, our organization has been the only Latinx community based organization under direct contract with the Regional Center of the East Bay since 1977.

Looking for Bilingual services?

One of the parents we have worked with is Lilian, a fun-loving, pleasant, and strong mother. She has a young child who was recently diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Before she came to La Familia, she felt overwhelmed because of her child’s additional needs due to his diagnoses and her lack of knowledge and ability to navigate the service system. Additionally, Lilian’s primary language is Spanish, and she doesn’t speak English, making it more difficult to access services and information due to the language barrier. Lilian learned about La Familia Disparity Funds Program through her friend, a participant in one of our support groups. Lilian was connected with the parent leader of the support group in her area and was invited to a monthly orientation in Spanish. Lilian attended the orientation and stated she felt welcomed and comfortable asking questions in her language and asked the DFP team to contact her for a following one-on-one meeting. Lilian is an active participant in one of our Support groups; she stated she wasn’t sure to ask for assistance, but she felt more confident after hearing the testimonies of other moms who currently receive the benefits. Lilian and her child now benefit from the services from Regional Center of the East Bay and feel supported, well informed, and empowered.
